Abstract
Saint George Icon Cathedral of Saint George Latakia
Protopresbyter Spyridon Fayad
This study examines the impact of the written text on the painted icon, demonstrating the stages of St. George’s life through scene analysis. Additionally, the study provides a technical description of Jerusalemite art, mainly due to the affiliation of this icon’s style to it, and the fact that the iconographer himself, Father Yaacoub Al-Baramki, was Jerusalemite.
Moreover, this study brings to the forefront the stylistic approach of the painter in the icon, where a strong correlation is discernible between the written text, specifically the biography of Saint George, and the scenes depicted in this icon.
This dissertation illuminates the Al-Baramki family as iconographers, contributing to comprehensive academic research and their role in this field.
